ArtsBridge awards scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students of the arts to create and implement arts education workshops for K-12 classrooms at no charge to the host classroom. We also accept applications from UCSD Sixth College students interested in choosing ArtsBridge as their practicum requirement.
Our scholars have provided over 4800 hours of arts instruction in San Diego Public Schools, with over 5200 pupils taking part in ArtsBridge workshops since September 2000.
The workshops are 16 to 20 hours in duration and generally last for an entire quarter. The ArtsBridge scholar works in collaboration with their host classroom teacher to develop project ideas that are relevant, standards-based and age appropriate. In addition, each scholar has been asked to identify a faculty mentor in their arts discipline who can help them to develop the strongest possible arts content for their projects.
All new ArtsBridge scholars will be enrolled in a quarter-long 4-unit class in which you will receive guidance on standards-based lesson planning, classroom management, and arts pedagogy. Once an applicant host is paired with a Scholar, the scholar will visit with the teacher or person requesting scholar services to gain a better understanding of the specific needs to be met by the project. ArtsBridge faculty mentors will offer input to and guide scholars in the development of lessons. Scholars are expected to meet with their Host to finalize those plans before presenting them to the students. The scholarship amount awarded is $1000 with a $100 travel and expense reimbursement. The limited scholarships are highly competitive, so applications should contain clear objectives about your arts and education background, as well as what you may like to do for your ArtsBridge project. Preference is given to arts major or arts minor upperclassmen, with 92 units or more.
